My phone rings, its Rusty from Blank, and after weeks of waiting by the phone, finally, a story. Maybe he needs someone to infiltrate the Peruvian Peyote cult....but no, I get the call to cover Beethoven's 9th performed by the University of Tennessee orchestra and chorus at the Tennessee Theatre. The hair on the back of my neck stands up, "YES " I scream spilling coffee and ashes over the floor. I enjoy classical music a great deal, I was a band and chorus geek through high school and college, so I really am perfect for the gig. It's just been awhile. Lately it's been a steady diet of psychobilly and vintage surf with a little Miles and Hendrix thrown in. But, I know what to do; I gather up a few versions of LVBs 9th recorded by various orchestras to get the music in my head, I read a little on the web about the 9th's significance and creation, and I spend a few days...absorbing.

So the big night finally comes. I put the Ludwig V to my hair with some industrial strength gel, I pick up a friend whom I can trust to appreciate the event, we dose up on some professional cappuccinos and finish the last of the blend.

Lisa King and Elizabeth King from GAC’s “Farm Kings”

The Kings raise chickens, pigs, and cows, and grow 40 varieties of produce on their 150 acres.  The family owns a bakery and the Freedom Farms Cafe that serves home cooked meals and sells Lisa’s prepared foods.

Lisa King, better known as “Mama Bear Lisa”, is the matriarch and glue of the King family.  When her time in the kitchen is done, she’s off to the fields to cut flowers and arrange them for weddings and parties.

Elizabeth King, nicknamed “Bitty” by her brothers, is the second oldest and only girl in the King family.  After spending every year working on the farm, Elizabeth took a year off to get some distance from the stress of the family business and to attend the Pittsburg Culinary Institute.

WDVX World Class Bluegrass concert series to continue, starring Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver with Ralph Stanley II

East Tennessee’s Own WDVX 89.9 FM will be hosting this year’s second installment of the World Class Bluegrass live concert series at 8 p.m. on Friday March 29 at the Bijou Theatre in downtown Knoxville. Special guest performers for this show will be bluegrass stars Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver with Ralph Stanley II.

The event is sponsored by the KAMF, or Knoxville Americana Music Foundation, an organization that has close ties both to the music and to WDVX.

“We organized Tennessee Shines for the first two years there in the Bijou, and this is the next sort of evolution of our organization,” said Tony Lawson, programming director for WDVX and one of five board members for the Knoxville Americana Music Foundation.

The Bijou Theatre has been a long time home for bluegrass and roots music in Knoxville, and Lawson easily explained why holding the World Class Bluegrass concert series there was a no-brainer.

When Michael "Bones " Allen walks into the Joy of Music School, he can't help but connect to the electric feeling of his environment, one that is fueled by the efforts of a dedicated and music-loving staff and over 100 eager students.

This is one of the many reasons that he has been volunteer teaching at the school for over nine years, donating hours of his time each week to educate children as well as to join in its magical atmosphere. He admits that he has never been part of an organization that was so aptly named, meeting and exceeding the pledge to share the joy of music to the Knoxville community. Such is the idea surrounding the celebrated school, a place which endeavors to provide free music lessons to all Knoxville children who have the motivation and passion to participate in the arts.

Allen, an experienced musician who has played professionally around Knoxville for many years, is a drum teacher at the school, volunteering his time every week to educate and train children in the art of rhythm.
